The Leader’s Responsibility: Preparing to Pass the Baton

John C. Maxwell said, “If you run well but are unable to pass the baton to another runner, you lose the race.” This quote perfectly captures the essence of leadership. A leader’s job isn’t just to lead—it’s to prepare others to step up and lead as well. Leadership isn’t about holding onto the position; it’s about creating a legacy by raising up other leaders who can carry the vision forward.

To do this effectively, leaders must be intentional about identifying and developing future leaders. But how do you know who is ready to take the baton? Here are key characteristics to look for when identifying those who can step into leadership roles:

1. They Align with the Vision

A future leader believes in the mission and values of the organization. They aren’t just going through the motions—they genuinely support the vision and want to help drive it forward.

2. They Have a Heart for Serving Others

Great leaders aren’t just focused on themselves; they are eager to help, serve, and uplift those around them. If someone consistently puts the needs of the team above their own, they’re demonstrating key leadership qualities.

3. They Embrace Change and New Opportunities

Leadership requires adaptability. Those who resist change and stay in their comfort zones will struggle to lead effectively. Look for people who are open to new ideas, embrace challenges, and willingly step into unfamiliar territory.

4. They Take Initiative and Step Up

True leaders don’t wait to be told what to do. They see what needs to be done and take action. Those who consistently volunteer for tasks, offer solutions, and take responsibility without being asked are showing leadership potential.

5. They Are Coachable and Willing to Learn

No leader has all the answers, and the best ones recognize that. People who are open to feedback, eager to learn, and willing to seek guidance from others demonstrate the humility and self-awareness necessary for leadership.

6. They Demonstrate Consistency and Reliability

Leadership isn’t about short bursts of effort—it’s about showing up every day with commitment and consistency. Future leaders are the ones who can be counted on to follow through, meet deadlines, and maintain a strong work ethic.

7. They Maintain a Growth Mindset

Leaders need to see possibilities, not limitations. Those who actively seek self-improvement, look for opportunities to develop new skills, and remain optimistic about the future are well-equipped to lead.

8. They Are Passionate About the Mission

A true leader isn’t just going through the motions—they are passionate about what they do. Passion fuels perseverance, and leaders with a strong sense of purpose will inspire others to follow.

9. They Lead by Example

Future leaders don’t just talk about leadership—they live it. They uphold the values of the team, maintain professionalism, and demonstrate the qualities they want others to emulate.

10. They Influence Others Positively

A leader’s impact is measured by their ability to inspire and influence. Those who naturally motivate, encourage, and uplift those around them are already leading in their own way.

Investing in Future Leaders

The 80/20 rule applies to leadership development—about 20% of your team will drive 80% of the impact. These are the individuals who step forward, take ownership, and influence others. As a leader, your role is to invest in them, challenge them, and provide opportunities for growth.

When you find people who align with your vision, embrace challenges, and seek growth, you’ve found individuals worth mentoring. The true measure of a leader isn’t just their own success—it’s their ability to pass the baton and watch the next generation of leaders rise.
